As the Winter Turns to Spring

the gentle rumbling of hunger
awakens the black bear.

the memory of tasting berries
and knowing the call to socialize
in order to reproduce.
as the gentle rumbling becomes
too hard to ignore moving slowly
at first then all at once. hungry
for the sun and all the new
life waiting for him
giving him courage to leave
the safety of his den no longer longing
for food and companionship
gives the black bear strength
and courage to endure the winter
once again.
